The British & Irish Lions 10-match tour of New Zealand has been described as ludicrous by Aviva Premiership-winning coach Mark McCall. The Lions schedule sees them play their first match of the tour on June 3, just one week after the Premiership and Guinness Pro12 finals. It is a relentless schedule which finishes with three Tests against the All Blacks and McCall has joined Premiership Rugby CEO Mark McCafferty in criticising the planning behind the tour.It is ludicrous they are playing 10 games, Saracens director of rugby McCall told the BBC. No-one talks about it, because its the Lions, and the Lions are special. The Lions are likely to feature a strong Saracens contingent and with player burnout a big issue for the sport, McCall says it is something that needs to be looked at.Wasps boss Dai Young says the tour will leave players needing a lot of patching up but John Feehan, Lions CEO, has defended the schedule. The season structures have been set in place for many years and the period between the end of the domestic season and the first tour match is the same as it was in 2009 and 2013, Feehan said.Likewise, the number of matches was agreed with Sanzar a long time ago and is the same as the 2009 and 2013 tours.Ideally we want as much preparation time as possible but the domestic and European season is complex and we understand the pressures on clubs, provinces and regions who are hugely supportive of the Lions.
