The best team in CFL football last year was the Toronto Argonauts. They defeated the Calgary Stampeders to win the Grey Cup. And yes, Calgary was last years second best team.Toronto deserved to win and Calgary deserved the opportunity to play for that 100th Grey Cup ring. But the team that played the best for the longest was the BC Lions. What the Lions accomplished last year was remarkable: they set franchise records for defensive excellence, finishing first in fewest points allowed, net yards allowed, fewest passing yards allowed, fewest rushing yards allowed, most quarterback sacks, and lowest second down conversion rate. In six of eight major defensive categories they were the best in the league. On offense they were tops in four of eight major categories, including fewest sacks allowed and best second down conversion rate. When it comes to a football season, the BC lions had a pretty good one! They just didnt win their last game. Football is an odd game in that it is a single event. In baseball, basketball, and hockey the best teams are usually revealed because of the number of games played. You cant play 82 games of football similar to hockey and basketball and you certainly cant play 162 games like baseball! And then to add playoffs; its physically impossible to play that much football. That is why "state of mind" is so important in football; you get one shot and that is it. BC had theirs and blew it; Calgary made it happen. New year, new team, and forget the past right? Im not so sure. I think you can be motivated as much by adversity from the past as clarity and optimism for the future. The Lions should let the lost opportunity of the Western Final burn a bit. There is a good chance they will get back there this year; so as the saying goes: if you dont learn from the past youre bound to repeat it. BC can use last years 34-29 loss at home to Calgary all season long if they wish. Both positive and negative reinforcement works, just in dramatically different ways. In terms of personnel there is not much to suggest improving with the Lions. Even in his 40s, kicker Paul McCallum had a great year going 44-52 on field goals. They have more players with the balance of youth and experience than any other team. It really is a game of focus and concentration all season long, anticipating those key dates: November 10, November 17, November 24. Playoff football. HOUSTON -- Brock Osweiler was so bad in a loss to San Diego on Sunday that Houston Texans coach Bill OBrien was asked twice after the game if hed considered benching him.Osweiler threw three interceptions and failed to move the offense for most of the day in a 21-13 win by the Chargers.OBrien said that Osweiler would not be benched in favor of Tom Savage, but didnt elaborate or criticize his quarterback. Osweiler however, had plenty to say about what he did wrong on Sunday.I need to play better for us to win, he said. I feel like our team gave us the opportunity to win today and I didnt play up to what Im capable of doing, and thats on me and Ill get that cleaned up.The Chargers were up by four in the fourth quarter when Philip Rivers evaded the rush and delivered a 25-yard pass to Inman. Kareem Jackson was flagged for unnecessary roughness for a helmet-to-helmet hit on the play, leaving San Diego at the 12-yard line. Rivers delivered a touchdown pass to rookie Hunter Henry on the next play to push the lead to 21-10.Osweilers second interception came after that when he badly overthrew C.J. Fiedorowicz and Dwight Lowery made the easy grab.Houston added a field goal with 37 seconds left and recovered an onside kick. But Osweilers first shot at the end zone was knocked down, and the second one was intercepted as time expired. We started out pretty well, but just couldnt do anything consistently on offense, OBrien said. Defense was out there quite a bit. I thought they played hard. Gave up some plays here and there, but just disappointing to lose. Its horrible.Sunday wasnt the first time Osweiler has struggled. Hes failed to play consistently throughout his first season in Houston after leaving to Denver to sign a $72 million contract.dddddddddddd He has 12 touchdowns and 13 interceptions. Despite his inconsistent play and a second straight loss, the Texans still have a half-game lead on Tennessee in the weak AFC South .I know weve had some ups and weve had some downs and youd like to see steady improvement, but sometimes that doesnt take place, Osweiler said. But Im very optimistic about what this football team can accomplish. All of our goals are right in front of us to accomplish. To do that theyll need to figure out how to win on the road with games at Green Bay and Indianapolis coming up in the next two weeks. Sunday was their first loss at home, but theyve won just one of four games away from Houston, at Jacksonville. Were going to try to work to make sure we have a good game plan for Green Bay, teach it to the players, OBrien said. Hopefully we can coach it good enough and execute it good enough that we can go out there and play better on offense against Green Bay.Along with taking better care of the ball, the Texans must take advantage of trips in the red zone. On Sunday they had a first down at the 6-yard line before the offense stalled and they settled for a 19-yard field goal. That cut the lead to 14-10 early in the fourth quarter. We just got to capitalize, running back Lamar Miller said. Once we get down there we have to make plays.---For more NFL coverage: http://www.pro32.ap.org and http://www.twitter.com/AP-NFL ' ' '
