LA VILLA, Italy -- As far as unheralded French skier Cyprien Sarrazin was concerned, the unusual parallel giant slalom was just like any other race.Displaying tunnel-like focus, Sarrazin claimed the first victory of his career in the rapid-fire night race on Monday, while overall World Cup leader Marcel Hirscher was eliminated in the first round for the second consecutive year in Alta Badia.I was so focused on my race that I wasnt even looking who was next to me, Sarrazin said.Competing in just the seventh World Cup race of his career, Sarrazin edged former overall champion Carlo Janka of Switzerland by 0.10 seconds in the single-run final.Of course I know who Janka is but I wasnt concerned about him, Sarrazin said.Sarrazins previous best finish was 24th in a traditional giant slalom earlier this month. Slightly more than two weeks ago, he won his first race on the second-tier Europa Cup circuit, a traditional GS in Sweden.I never even dreamed of winning a World Cup, Sarrazin said. I just wanted to ski as fast as possible. This is my first experience in a parallel race so its quite a surprising result.Kjetil Jansrud took third, ahead of Norwegian teammate Leif Kristian Haugen.Frances Steve Missillier eliminated Hirscher in the two-run opening round of the 32-man tournament-style bracket. The nations team event, which features the similar discipline of parallel slalom, will make its Olympic debut at the 2018 Winter Games in Pyeongchang. Its fun to race and its good on TV and for the crowd in the finish area, Janka said.Needing to complete six runs to win, skiers were shuttled back up to the start after each run on off-road vehicles after making brief pit stops with their ski technicians.Swiss racer Justin Murisier nearly crashed into Sarrazin in the first round, invading the Frenchmans course after losing control.I didnt even notice, Sarrazin said.Racers wore protective non-abrasive underwear to prevent cuts from the razor-sharp edges of their opponents skis in case of crashes.Only the opening round featured two runs and Hirscher had a wild first trip down the Gran Risa course, nearly losing control over a jump, then crossing the line with his right ski high in the air as he leaned over to stay upright.Hirscher trailed by 0.13 in the opening run and won the second by 0.06 but it wasnt enough for the Austrian, who on Sunday matched Alberto Tomba for a record fourth GS -- the traditional kind -- on the Gran Risa.Hirscher still holds a comfortable 171-point lead over Jansrud in the overall standings, and he remained in front of Alexis Pinturault -- who was eliminated by Andre Myhrer of Sweden in the second round -- in the GS standingsSome of the more technical skiers suggested that the format favors the bigger and more muscular downhill racers -- evidenced by Jansrud edging Aksel Lund Svindal in last years parallel. There are less turns and a lot of rolls, something I can to relate to as a speed skier and thats an advantage but you need be a good skier to pull it off, Jansrud said.Jansrud collected a 20,000 euro prize for collecting the best results over the four races in Val Gardena, where he won a super-G, and Badia.Last week, Jansrud announced that if a Norwegian skier won the prize they would give the money to the teams coaches for the squads annual season-ending party. So now I guess I have to honor my word, Jansrud said. They deserve a big party so Im happy to say that the party fund just increased by a lot of money. So well have a good time in the spring. The mens circuit goes to Madonna Di Campiglio for another night event, a traditional slalom, on Thursday.---Andrew Dampf on Twitter: www.twitter.com/asdampfTzu-Wei Lin Jersey . Troubled Australian star Nick Kyrgios rates his rollercoaster year a successful one, despite his 2016 ATP season ending in an on-court meltdown that earned him a tour ban.As he collected the first three titles of his career, including a maiden ATP 500 series victory in Tokyo, Kyrgios rose to a career-high ranking of No.13 - an effort he looks back on with pride.Obviously, we had a lot of highs, a lot of lows, the 21-year-old -- who also said hed been enjoying working with a sports psychologist -- told Fox Sports. But ultimately, my ranking jumped from about 30 to 13, so thats a successful year.It was a fun year. I did a lot of fun things. I got Australia back in the world group of the Davis Cup, won a couple of titles, so its been a good year.Off the back of his enforced extended break, a new conditioning coach and some sessions with a psychologist, Kyrgios has hopes of cracking the top 10 next year. But he isnt making that the be-all and end-all of his 2017 campaign.Ranking for mes not the issue, not a goal at all. Its just staying healthy, being able to play a lot of events, he said.Kyrgioss listless capitulation to German Mischa Zverev at the Shanghai Masters, resulting in an eight-week ATP Tour suspension, added to the list of reputation-lowering incidents he was involved iin this year.dddddddddddde also drew the ire of officials for arguing with chair umpires at the French Open and Wimbledon. His ban was reduced to three weeks after he agreed to consult a sports psychologist, and he believes his punishment has had benefits.Ive been doing that (seeing a psychologist) and its actually been good, he said.Just relaxing a little bit, spending more time with my family, girlfriend as well. Its one way to look at (it), to get more time off with the people that you love, and Ive been training as well. So its set me up in good stead for 2017.It just gave me time to think about and analyse everything Ive got to get better at.Coachless Kyrgios said hed also be open to receiving guidance from former Australian star Mark Philippoussis, who says hed consider mentoring the young star.Weve got a lot of similarities on the court, said Kyrgios, whose team Singapore Slammers on Sunday (Monday morning AEDT) retained their International Premier Tennis League title in India. He plays big and hes had a lot of ups and downs in his career as well.Hes learnt a lot, hes a great guy, hes very caring and always been there for me as well, so maybe.
